Events Calendar and "Fiestas"


The opportunities are countless. Each municipality has its special saint, which it applies to honour. Apart from the legal holidays - still another a large number of additional holidays with long tradition.

There is always something to do. Expressed with music, theatre, good meal and a lot of wine.

January and February

January

• Reyes Magos: An extraordinary parade in the city of Palma celebrating the arrival of the Three Kings, part of the Christmas celebrations (January 5th).

• Night of Sant Antoni: Celebration including bonfires, parades, feasts, and dances. Many people dress in costumes (16th).

• Revelta de Sant Sebastià: Celebration in the city of Palma with bonfires, live music, and dances in the street (19th).

• Fiesta de Sant Sebastiá, patron of Palma: The city attends mass in the morning and at night the best fireworks show of the year occurs at the promenade (20th).

February

• Carnaval: Marches and processions before Lent.

• Vuelta Ciclista a Mallorca: The annual cycling challenge of the Balearic Islands.

• Feria de Antigüedades: Antiques fair (Palma).

March and April

March

• Día de las Islas Baleares: Celebration of the autonomy of the archipelago (1st).

• Rally de coches clásicos. Antique cars race.

April

• Regata Princesa Sofía: Yachting regatta is one of the most important in the Balearic Islands. Event located in Palma (25th).

• XXI Feria Náutica Internacional. Nautic fair, Palma.

• Festival Internacional de Música en Deia: Concerts throughout the summer.

Easter Week
• Jueves Santo: Held on Maundy Thursday in Palma, a procession leaves the church of La Sang, carrying a crucifix (8th).

• Viernes Santo: On Good Friday, many other processions are held in cities and towns throughout the island, including Palma. The fair of Passover offers a calmer alternative to the celebrations (9th).


May and June

May
• Domingo de Mayo Feria de Sóller: The second Sunday in May, mock battles are staged in Sóller and Port de Sóller to mark the raid by Turkish pirates in 1561.

• Fiesta de Sant Doménech, Manacor (24th).

June

• Fiesta de Sant Antoni de Padua: Held in Arta, the celebratory feast includes parades of locals dressed up as horses (13th).

• Fiesta de Sant Joan (San Juan): Celebrated in cities and towns throughout the island (24th).

July and August

July

• Día de Virgen de Carmen: Celebration held throughout the Balearic Islands for the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. The feast includes night-time seaside parades as well as the blessing of fishing boats (15th – 16th).

August

• Regata de la Copa del Rey: Beginning the first week in August, this large and very popular international yachting regatta is held under the patronage of King Juan Carlos, Palma.

• Mare de Déu dels Angels: Reenactment of battles between the Moors and Christians in Pollença (2nd).

• Assumption of the Virgin: Major festival occurring throughout Spain (15th).
• Fiesta de Sant Agustin: Celebrated in Felantix with medieval dancing of the typical Cavallets (28th).

September and October

September

• Although Santa Ponsa only holds one fiesta each year, it is widely acknowledged as being one of the biggest and best on Majorca. The Fiesta of Rei en Jaume has now grown into a two week celebration that usually starts around the 1st of September, to commemorate the landing and conquering of Mallorca by Jaime I in 1229. He and his troops landed at Santa Ponsa, and today the spot is marked by a stone cross on the southern headland not far from the nautical club. The fiesta ends on the second weekend of the month with a grand procession through the streets, followed by a mock battle between the Moors and Christians on the beach on the Saturday. That night there is then a rock concert from 9pm until 4am, which has in the past attracted many top international acts. The whole fiesta ends with a grand fireworks display at midnight on the Sunday, the likes of which you've never seen before.

  • Día de Catalunya: National holiday throughout the islands (11th).

    • Festa des Vermar: The last Sunday in September, held in Binissalem, this grape-harvest festival includes wine-tasting, floats, and concerts.

October

• Día de la Hispanidad: National Spanish holiday, held to commemorate the discovery of the New World by Christopher Colombus in 1492 (12th).

• Festa de Virgin: Palma festival includes large amounts of cakes, singing and general festivities (21st).

• Festa dies Butifarro: Third Sunday in October, festival of the sausage. Popular dances, folk music and food in Sant Joan.

 

November and December

November

• Dijous Bo: Third Thursday in November, held in Inca, a popular and important agricultural feast, including fairs.

• Fiesta de Sant Andreu (San Andrés), Santanyí (30th).

December

• Mercados de la Navidad: At the Plaza Mayor y Plaza España in Palma (until January).

• Noche Buena: Christmas Eve celebrations, including nativity plays and midnight mass, throughout the islands (24th).

• El Belén: Nativity of Palma (24th).

• Santos Inocentes: Spanish equivalent of April Fool's Day (28th).

• Festa de l'Estandard: Feast commemorating Palma's conquest in 1229 (31st).
