Isla del Toro
Beautiful underwater landscape and very rich marine life. The visibility
here can be 30 metres. Possibility to do a safe deep dive (because
the slow descending on the reef) Dive for beginners to advanced.
Fairly recently it has been given the status of a marine reserve,
and it shows - the amount of marine life here is prolific. El Toro
makes a nice introduction to diving in Mallorca; a sheltered entry
and exit point in the lee of the island sees you hit a depth of between
6 and 8 metres. The ledge is covered in dense shoals of seabream,
grunts and wrasse, their scales catching the sunlight whilst they
feast on sea urchins. As you approach the edge of the ledge there
is a steep and sudden drop off and the rocks become smothered with
seagrass. With the good visibility that is normal at this dive site,
the bottom of the wall doesn't appear very far away and you soon find
you have hit 30 metres. At this depth it flattens out for some distance
before another drop off that goes to 60 metres and beyond.

| The newly
created marina |
|

The marina will be extended to raise the existing mooring
capacity from 404 to 486 and a substantial 470 additional
car parkings. The extra 82 moorings will be from 25 metres
to 60 metres - this will provide serious mooring facilities
for larger craft. The present maximum berth is 40 metres.
There will be new office and retail space, a ramp to launch
and beach small boats, a sailing school and the stabilisation
of cliff face adjacent to the marina. The nearby manmade sandy
beach will be extended seaward to create more space. Already
a number of high quality brand goods retailers have agreed
to open outlets in the extended office and retail areas.
The new project will not utilise even a metre of additional
coastline, the extra moorings will be located inside an extra
sea wall constructed outside the existing one.
The internationally famous designer Philippe Starck has been
engaged to design the port extension, his minimalistic designs
and the unique combination of aesthetics and functionality
in his creations.
Completion of the project is scheduled for 2009.
